A Bundh, It's Meaning

This photo really captures what a true Bundh is; a so-called strike, and the police's indolent response to the empty threat.

The World Against Me

Posted by Danny Pen , Monday, August 3, 2009 3:45 PM

I have recently become a big fan of edited photography. Not that I didn't like it before, but let's say that I've "re-discovered" it. It's often very hard (for me at least, I don't know about you other photographers out there) to get the right picture. The picture that I wanted to take. I all the time end up taking a picture that is not quite what I set out to take.

It can be very annoying, and oddly satisfying at the same time. When the end picture is not as good as I'd hoped, I am obviously disappointed. But other times, when the result is better than I had hoped, I am satisfied, happy.

Let me show you.

The above picture is not exactly what I had in mind when I decided to take the picture. Because of natural interferences, it often is not. In this one, I would have liked less trees, and more of the person (my cousin, Tara). What I should have done was take the picture in a field, so that I could get a reflection of Tara against the sky. More sunlight would have been nice, too, but unfortunately the day was actually quite cloudy. It poured rain after I took the shot. I had to work with what I had.

Ah well, the trying conditions of being a photographer. Sometimes, the world just doesn't want you to take the picture.

But I did it anyway.

Meeting Lolli McPheonix

Posted by Danny Pen , Sunday, August 2, 2009 8:18 PM

Here's a poem/song I wrote. I wrote the music for the first part, and just recently finished the lyrics. Enjoy!

“Lolli, please talk to me,
Don’t tell me it’s a dream”,
He says to me as he runs his hands,
Up and down my close-shaved knee,
He talks to me, he pulls my hair,
Then slips one on the cheek,

“Mr. Vivaldi,
Please try and understand,
This isn’t how I planned this out,
So let’s take two steps back”

Who’s that standing at the bar,
With the pink-umbrella drink,
You don’t want to mess with her they say,
Cause her dad owns the company,
She’s on my mind, she’s in my head,
She keeps on botherin’ me,

“Hey, where’re ya goin’?
The party’s just begun”,
“Must be home by 12,” she says,
“And it’s already 10 past 1”

Now she’s walking out the door,
With her pride slung on her back,
If anyone’s got looks that kill,
I’d put my life on Black,
She knows her way around her men,
That’s much too much for me,

“It’s time I’d be runnin’,
I’ve got places to go,
Thanks so much, you’ve been awfully kind,
But these things come in rows, so,

Please my dear, sweet Juliette,
Don’t take up all my time,
I have a place I’ve got to go,
It’s far away from here,
I turn my back, she looks at me,
I’ll cringe as I walk away,

I had a good thing goin’,
But I threw it all away,
To chase a dream I met one night,
Is it worth it, I don’t know.

The reason some of it is written with Quotation marks is because the "narrator" changes throughout the song, from male to female. The girl in the song is called Lolli McPheonix. It's a weird name, but funny story behind it (kind of). I was sitting with a bunch of my friends, eating at a restaurant, when two people started speaking at once, and then suddenly stopped to let the other one finish. When they spoke, what I heard was Lolli McPheoinx. So that's how I came up with the name.

I wrote this because I was planning on writing an album (it's still in the works, somewhat) and the album was going to have a story-line to it. Basically, it was to deal with human emotions, and tell the story of 2 people who meet and fall in love. Lolli is one of these people. There's more to it than that, but I won't give it all away just yet, partially because I haven't written too much else.

I don't yet have a name for the male character (but I have thought of some other cool female names). I get a big kick out of creating names. I don't know why. Particularly girl's names. Couldn't tell you why.

But if anyone has an idea for a male name, I'd love to hear it.

Hullo again! This time from Bangkok, Thailand. Just flew in last night from Baltimore, MD. I was staying with my cousins there, and it was just so much fun. This picture is of my cousin, Tara Macdonald.

I like this picture, because it's kind of unfinished. She has the hugest grin on her face, with her arm outstretched, but you can't see what else is going on. Which leaves a lot to your own personal interpretation.

I'd like to say that I came up with this "idea" myself, but I actually did not. A photographer who I found out about a year ago on a website called www.weeklyshot.org (great site, if you have time, check it out) took a picture like this. The website has weekly themes, and photographers around the world interpret these themes in different ways. The theme for this particular picture was called "one half". Justin Gaynor took a similar picture, and it was form here that I drew my inspiration for this one.

So, Mr Gaynor, I thank you sincerely

A Sip of Life

Here's another one from the boat. My dad's friend's son Aidan, who, through visits to Nepal, and visits to Tacoma has become one of my own friend's, took this picture. He was just experimenting with my camera.

You may not be able to see, but in the glass from which I am drinking is red wine. My dad's friend (Mark, for future reference) is somewhat of a connoisseur, particularly of wine. I think he has some French blood in him. We sampled some of his collection of fine wines, and I realized that it is my preferred alcoholic drink. I haven't tried that many (Honestly!) but form what I have tried, wine is my favorite. Mark also taught me how to drink wine, for there is a right way and a wrong way. I really enjoyed this overnight trip, partially because of the wine! Wine is not drunk to get drunk. If you're doing that, then you're doing it the wrong way. It is meant to be sipped, tasted, smelt, enjoyed bit by bit, and that is what I really love. Fine wine, great conversation, great food, all add up to a very good time in my book.

The Ocean and The Sun

Posted by Danny Pen 12:55 PM

Last week, while visiting friends staying in Tacoma, Washington, who happens to own a sail boat, we sailed up in the northern Puget Sound. His boat (well, it's really a ship I think) is a gorgeous 42 foot ship called the Symra. I really love that name. I don't exactly know why, but it just sounds good to my ears. I think it means "anemone" in Norwegian.

We launched from the dock in Anacortes, a few miles north of Seattle and sailed out into the San Juan Islands. It was a great day, although not much wind (which I wasn't too sad about; sailing is not exactly my cup of tea.) Still, we had a great time. My dad and I, his friend from high-school and his son, relaxing, listening to a little Bob Marley, eating a great meal, and then letting the gentle swells of the ocean rock us to sleep. This pic was snapped as the sun was setting.

It's nothing special, but I liked the way the sun hit the water. The seaweed floating in the middle of the picture make it just a bit more interesting as well. This looks great when it's enlarged. The image above i probably too small to really see, but the original makes a great desktop background. Email me if you want the original ;)

I plan on going out tomorrow possibly, or the next day to a small beach to get some pics.

So, as always, it's been a pleasure having this one-way conversation that I so much enjoy (and I hope you do too).

Spiraling Fire

Posted by Danny Pen , Thursday, July 16, 2009 5:50 PM

Hullo, Hullo, once again, this time from "the enchanted Isle", more commonly known as Hilton Head, South Carolina. I've been here for the past few days, relaxing (I haven't had enough of it yet, so I'm savoring it while it lasts!), swimming, and just enjoying. I was just in Oregon, about 2 hours south of Portland, visiting my Dad's family. It was great fun, seeing cousins, aunts, uncles, grand-parents, uncle-in law's. This shot was taken on the 4th of July, and it's of my cousin.

We bought a box of fireworks, and my cousin here insisted that we buy a box of sparklers, and that is what she was waving. I had her wave it around, while I tuned down the shutter speed to 1.6, and snapped it. The result was, as you can see above, quite interesting. I took a lot of photos with this slow shutter speed, changing the amount of it, with varying results.

I like the spiral that she made with it, coincidentally illuminating and framing her face in the middle. I wasn't sure how much to crop of this photo, so I spent a good amount of time changing it around, hehe. Anywho, I think it turned out alright

I'll post more later, because I have even more pics that I took somewhere else to post

The Summer Way

Posted by Danny Pen , Wednesday, July 1, 2009 10:08 PM

Hey all, sorry I haven't posted for a while, but there have been some technical difficulties. I won't go on a rant about Nepal telecomm. systems, so I'll leave it at, "my internet crashed".

I'm in the states now, just arrived in Seattle this morning. Could not have had a nicer day, B-E-A-uitiful weather all day, took a nice hike (where I unfortunately forgot to bring my camera) and now am back at my aunt's house until tomorrow.

The last two weeks of my life have been such a joy, simply relaxing, swimming, tanning, eating, sleeping, climbing, riding amusement park rides, listening and traveling.

This picture of my cat pretty much sums up my outlook on life at the moment.

Now, doesn't that look relaxing? That is my life. Just taking it very easy, making sure not to worry about...well, anything. It has been such a joy, and I am very much looking forward to doing much of the same things in the weeks to come. Hopefully I will be able to get some good shots in too, of anything and everything, to give you all a brief insight into my family and life with them.

I'm leaving tomorrow to Cottage Grove, Oregon, where I will be for a few days. May or may not have internet, so bare with me if nothing comes up for a few days.

So, until next time, it's been a pleasure having a one-way conversation with you

Another One For the Books

Posted by Danny Pen , Monday, June 1, 2009 2:24 AM

OK, so the blog is back up! I honestly have no idea what happened, but it's working now, an I'm not complaining. As I said, I have some cool new pics. This one was taken in my living room one night. This wall hanging was directly under this light that illuminated bits of the sculpture in beautiful ways. This is one of the best shots of it.

Yet another one for the book of random pics from around the house...

On another note, the end of the school year is coming ever closer! This is always a fun time, excluding the exams and projects due. Luckily I only have one exam to worry about, as my others were AP's and are therefore already over. Just one more week of school to get through, and then I will be a senior (truly, a scary thought). Freshman year seemed like yesterday; where, oh where has the time gone?

I'm thinking of changing the layout of the blog, yet again. I'm bored with this one, although it is pretty cool I think. It is however, time for a new one. Any ideas?

Well, as usual, it's been a pleasure having a one-way conversation with you.

Blog is Down!

Posted by Danny Pen , Tuesday, May 26, 2009 8:09 AM

For some bizarre reason I am not able to post any pictures on the blog. Everything is just a mess, and I don't know why! It's VERY frustrating, because I just took some great shots! Anywho, I'm temporarily 'shutting down' until this whole mess gets sorted out.

Sorry guys!

Cheers,
Dan

The Remains of a Rainy, Windy Night

Posted by Danny Pen , Monday, May 4, 2009 6:48 AM

Monsoon is here, yet again. And with it comes a renewed political conflict. The Maoist leader stepped down today, as a result of growing discontent with him. At least that's as far as I know. So I'm prepping for another couple days off of school in the coming weeks.

On the plus side, the monsoon brings with it a new opportunity for pictures. I woke up Sunday morning to the gentle pitter-patter on the rooftops, of the rhythm of the raindrops. I got my camera and was going to take some shots of the rain, but by the time I got outside it was barely drizzling at all. I ended up taking pictures of my backyard instead. Like these prayer flags.

These windswept prayer flags are a result of the rain the night before. It's not really 'monsoon' per-se, but let's see what comes of this. Maybe a Monsoon project, with the weepy windowpanes dripping with dew, the sound of the rain falling from the sky.

What say ye?

A Selfie that Actually Worked

Posted by Danny Pen , Sunday, April 19, 2009 3:56 AM

Confession: I did not actually take this picture! That's Josh (who came with me to Russia) and he took this himself. I just think it's a cool picture.

I'm actually kind of amazed that this turned out so well. Usually when someone takes a self-portrait (selfie :P jajaja!) with an SlR it doesn't turn out like this. We're at a Church in Moscow here, and after about 4 or 5 pics of the church, we started going for amusing pictures rather than beautifully artistic ones. It was just more interesting that way.

Anywho, I'll try to post soon. But I can't guarantee anything. Time's tight these days. It's usually money that's tight, but for me right now it's time. exams are coming up, the last quarter of the year is starting. I'll try to find time to post a couple shots.

So, until next time,

It's been a pleasure having a one-way conversation with you

The Subway Scene

Posted by Danny Pen 3:46 AM

So far I haven't done such a great job of keeping up on my new years reso. I got back from Russia two weeks ago, and here's the first pic that I've posted. Sorry! I've just been busy with school. But I have some time on my hands now, so let's see if I can get a couple pics up to make up for my absence.

This was taken in the subway, which you should have already guessed that, in Moscow (you really weren't expected to guess that one). I was experimenting with shutter speed in the stations, which were pretty cool.

A lot of the pics I took here didn't turn out so well; I didn't have my good lens with me at the time (curses!) so most of them were completely blurry. But this one's not so bad. The person;s in focus at least. And the train does look sort of like it's moving.

Good :)

Hot Hot Heat

Posted by Danny Pen , Tuesday, March 10, 2009 6:51 AM

The weather these days has really been bothering me. I'll wake up in the morning, and it'll be reasonably cold; but then by the afternoon, the temperature will be so gold-dang hot. It's unbelievable. I mean, it's not that I mind the heat. Well, that's not entirely true, but it's not like I hate the heat. I just hate that we're getting opposite ends of the temperature spectrum here. Really peeves me off.

Anywho, apologies for not posting any 'new' photos. My plan to check out Pashupati last weekend failed miserably. Things just didn't work out in time, and now it's too late I think. All the Sadhu's will be gone by now.

So for the meanwhile, here's another random pic from my trek in October.

As always, It's been a pleasure having a one-way conversation with you!

Springtime for Dulce (And a Friendship for a Sadhu)

Posted by Danny Pen , Wednesday, February 25, 2009 2:52 AM

Spring time has come to Kathmandu. Whenever I think of 'spring' I remember Will Ferrell in "the Producers" as the neo-nazi play-write who writes a play called "Springtime for Hitler". This photo was taken in my backyard. That's Dulce, my dog. She was just playing in the grass, and I needed something to take a picture of, so I snapped a couple shots of her rolling around in the grass. Not what you'd call a world-class photo, but I find it quite nice anyway.

In the meantime, life goes on as we know it. I recently got the bill for my AP courses which came as sort of a shock. It really put things into perspective for me. We really are more than halfway through the school year. It still feels like yesterday that I was meeting new students on the first day of school. How time flies, huh?

On the plus side we have Friday off. I am unsure of the details, but I would assume the reason for this is Lhosar, the Tibetan New year. That's always nice.

This time I can promise you more interesting pics to come. I'm going to Pashupati on Sunday with my dad, a little father-son photo walk among the Sadhu's from India. They come up about once a year for the annual Shiva Ratri celebration, and my dad seems to know all of them. Its funny, whenever we go there, they'll greet him like an old friend, offer him an iron jockstrap, or a puff from their always full Chilum. Dad takes some people for a walk around Pashupati every year at this time, so he would know all the Sadhu's.

Everyone takes pictures of them, and gives them 5 rupees, or so, and then never sees them again. There's the difference between them all and my dad. He makes a point to take the pictures, give them some money, and then bring them the prints after a few days. It's that little thing that makes all the difference. He treats them like real people, not as a spectacular phenomenon. They all have a laugh about the pics, and in this way a friendship is developed. It's nothing special; not like their BFF's. But this small action of kindness is what separates him from the rest of the photographers out there.

No wonder they all like him so much.

I'll post more after the weekend.

So for now, I'm off!

Misunderstood

Posted by Danny Pen , Tuesday, February 10, 2009 5:24 AM

I just got back from Delhi on Sunday. I was there for a music festival among schools in South East Asia. It was pretty fun, but really tiring. Three days of non-stop singing will really take it out of you. I had a great time, but I don't think people understood me.

I would crack all these great jokes, but no one laughed at them! It's just my sense of humor, but it was still a little bit traumatizing. I mean, what if I go somewhere else, and no one there gets me either? What if the only place I can live is here? One girl actually thought I was crazy. Honestly, she thought that I was seriously crazy. Like I belong in an insane asylum. I guess that's actually kind of cool. I mean, I see crazy as totally wild, and I'd rather be that than just a weirdo.

Other than the misunderstandings, the trip was really good. We were only there for 3 days, but it felt like a year. No joke. It felt like it was FOREVER. That's probably cause everyday the teachers would squeeze as much energy as they could from us all, which meant that we were pretty much busy every second, of every day. I didn't get to se much of Delhi (because we were so busy) but the school there is really nice. It's awesome. It's like a real school. I mean, here we have a real school too. But in Delhi they had a cafeteria and like three gyms and I got lost about 8 billion times and it was AWESOME!

On another note, I aplogize for not posting any photos for ages. I just haven't taken any since...well, a long time.

Sorry! I'll try to get some random shots in this weekend!

Anywho, time for din-din now.

So, as always, it's been a pleasure having a one way conversation with you (I think that's going to be my new sign off line. What do you think?)

Overthinking

Posted by Danny Pen , Sunday, February 1, 2009 4:17 AM

Tomorrow is the Super-ball. For those of you who don't know, that is the final of the American Football tournament. Now, I can't say that I'm a big football fan (I don't even know whose playing tomorrow. I know it's Pittsburgh against, (here's where I get lost) Arizona? Who knows). It got me thinking. Why am I going to this thing? I'm going to be waking up at 4 in the morning, to go watch something that I don't have any real interest for, and then to go to school. I'm not even going to be able to finish watching this thing. Maybe I'm just doing it for something to do. But then again, I could always sleep instead of going to this. The extra hour sometimes does wonders for me.

So why do I do it? I guess I'll never know.

Any ideas?

"I typed your name into a calculator where it spelled a dirty word when I turned it upside-down"

That has absolutely nothing to do with the super-ball, but I thought I'd throw it in here because I'm such a free spirit. It's a line from a song ("Twilight Omens"-Franz Ferdinand: Check it out!). For some reason that I really like that line. When I heard it I was like "Hey! That's cool!". It's original, quirky, witty-all that good stuff.

It's just one of those lines that stands out (at least to me), ya know?

You know, I've always wondered (for about 5 seconds now) what classifies a word as "dirty". I mean, there are cuss words, that I understand. But other words can be called Dirty too, when used in the right context (I won't go into details, for both our sakes). It's kinda weird. What if "sandals" was a dirty word? Now pick your favorite "dirty" word, and switch it's place with sandals.

Who was the dude who heard *insert dirty word here* and said "That's a bad word!"? Ever thought about that? Might just be me.

Oy-vey. That's what thinking about something too much will do to ya.

Wow. I'm kinda lost now.

Wow...

Stress

Posted by Danny Pen , Thursday, January 29, 2009 7:37 AM

Ah, the blog. What a wonderful way to relieve stress. Although I'm not really stressed anymore; I'm just fishing for an excuse to post something mildly interesting, and hopefully brighten the days of those less fortunate than I :). Now I don't want to go on a rant about stress, because, come to think of it, I don't get stressed all that often. I was talking about this with my friend the other day, and we deduced, after many mutterings and squablings (is that a word? If not, I'd like to get full credit for it) that I never get stressed out, and that she gets stressed enough for the both of us.

Let me explain.

1) I don't get stressed
2) 'Friend' does
3) Therefore, she takes all the extra stress that I don't get

It's really quite simple (I don't know why I had to explain it again. Maybe I'm just bs-ing here.)

In which case, goodnight

It's been a pleasure having a one-way conversation with you

Sitcks and Stones (And Shells on the Beach)

Posted by Danny Pen , Wednesday, January 28, 2009 6:13 AM

Another week, another dollar. Tests to take, projects to create, essays to write, music to make; and of course, the never-ending activity (at least for me) photos to take. Still haven't gotten around to salvaging the rest of my photos from the wreckage that is laptop. I had a hectic weekend, so I didn't have time to save another few snaps form my ever-so interesting life that all-one-of-you faithfully follow :). Anywho (and I know I've said this before) but this weekend I PROMISE to find something to post. But with all the schtuffs that are coming up, I really don't know when I'll find time to get some new shots. Busy, busy busy is my name. A day in the life, huh?

So for now I'll have to make due with some other pics from the summer, although I am running out, so there's a doozy, (whatever that means, I think I've heard it before, but I'm not sure if it's 'doozy' or 'dozy' or something else; pretty sure it means bummer, too bad, stuff like that. Also I don't know if you say "that's a doozy" or "there's a doozy". I'll leave it up to you guys to decide how to pronounce it.) So ANYWHO (I say that a lot, don't I?)...

As in continuation with my 'beach' theme that I have unwilling and unknowingly (until now) created, I've selected another pic to show you all. This one was taken in South Carolina, during the summer when I visited there. I like the curve of the sticks, that go along with the shells surrounding them. Pretty cool, (and totally ocean-made too)

Well, I think I'm all typed-out; another early morning today (when, oh when will all this preparation for SAISA music be over?!) so I'm 'bout ready to hit the sack/hay/bed.

So as always, It's been a pleasure having a one-way conversation with you

You stay classy KTM

(That doesn't have as nice a ring to it like the one from Achorman, does it? Now there's a good sign-off line. "You stay classy San Diego!" I gotta think me-up one of them. I'll keep you posted.)

Join Me On The Horizon

Posted by Danny Pen , Wednesday, January 21, 2009 5:51 AM

Ok, I know it's the middle of winter, but I just don't have any more pictures to post. So I'm going back through my pics from the summer, to try and squeeze some more blood from the stone (the stone being my old laptop, the blood being my pictures, many of which I was unable to recover. I have faith though, just not the time til the weekend). I took this in Zanzibar, on the very same sunset beach as discussed before. Which reminds me;

I recently read a book that I enjoyed tremendously (now there's a phrase I've never said before). It's called The Beach. You may know it from the movie of the same name (it had Leo D in it, so that's mega-awesome). It's about this guy (I'd say late teens, early twenties) who goes to Bangkok. He's escaping from his past, and everything that held him down back home. He arrives in BKK, hears this myth about this beach that's supposed to be absolute paradise, finds himself with a map to this untouched, tropical Eden, and sets off to find it. That's the basic gist of the plot, but very much dumbed down. It really is a great read, and the movie is just spectacular as well. It's filled with great quotes that really influenced me, and yet I don't know how.

"We all travel thousands of miles just to watch TV and check in to somewhere with all the comforts of home, and you gotta ask yourself, what is the point of that?"

That's one of them. I really liked this one. It's really changed my entire outlook on vacationing. It's funny how these things work; how we can read (or in this case hear) a pattern of words and they can have an everlasting influence on us. Weird, huh? Avtually, it's probably not that weird; I guess I'm just easily impressed.

Anywho, this picture just reminded me of the genius that is The Beach.

And in a way, the above quote does have meaning with this pic. I remember being here, and thinking that it really was paradise. The sun setting, with the boat lazily crossing by, while the rays of light illuminate all that is around it. And then, I look down and see lawn furniture in the wake. Quelle drag, huh?

Whatev. It was still a ferosh place to be, even with the patio attire.

Fancy a conversation on the horizon?

Winter Mornings

Posted by Danny Pen , Monday, January 19, 2009 5:16 PM

I am a huge Calvin and Hobbes fan. Those books are my bibles. I remember one particular one, where Calvin is lying in his bed, buried underneath his blankets, while outside the snow falls gently. He snuggles deeper into his cave of blankets, while his mom brings him a mug of steaming hot cocoa and tucks him in. That is however, all a dream, as n the next picture his mom comes in, without hot cocoa, shouting "Why aren't you dressed yet?! The bus is going to be here any second!"

For me that is a lot like my life these days. Having just finished my winter vacation, I realize that I could use another one right now. I guess I'm just in the same mentality that held me over break. It was great though. Waking up and then casually looking over to my desk, where the clock would read 8:00, I would smile and slide back into the blankets, listening (not to the sound of snow falling unfortunately) but the soft gentle purring of my cat sleeping next to me. Ah, what a life.

Now it's up at 5:30 every other morning, for what ends up being a very long day.

Oh well.

C'est la vie.

A Sunset Worth Saving

Another one of Rachel. This is the same beach as the previous one. I remember sitting out on the beach for a long time, at least two hours while the sun set all around us. It really was a sunset worth saving

A Cinematic Sunset

Posted by Danny Pen 6:10 AM

Hello again, and happy new year! I know it's been awhile since my last post (a whole year! Hahaha...) but I'm back yet again, with a couple old photos. This one was taken in Zanzibar, in June 2008. That's my sister Rachel standing on the beach, gazing off into the sunset. It really was a spectacular sunset, and hopefully I've captured the feeling of it through this photo.

New years resolution: POST MORE! And not just photos this year. I'm branching out; I've decided to include random insights, quotes, news, etc. In a nutshell: Anything! As you may have seen, I added a Description too; "The world as I see it" This is going to be somewhat of a motto for the blog to come. I hope to provide for you all, a sometimes brief, sometimes detailed insight into the life and times of one young person's experience in Kathmandu. I'm taking a pact; a pact to stay committed to this, for the rest of the year. So far I haven't posted much because of work, and well, maybe I'm just lazy. But no more is that to be the case. It's a new leaf from here on out. So please, enjoy, and look forward to newer (and more frequent) posts!
