On Which We Tread

There's this online photography website (www.weeklyshot.org) and every week they announce a new theme, and photographers around the world show their interpretations of this theme. This week's theme is called "on which we tread" and it's just different pictures of the ground, things that seem ordinary in our every day life. Now, Weeklyshot is a site that's invite only, meaning that you have to get invited to join, and I don't know anyone who's on the site so I can't join. This is just my own interpretation of the theme; its one of the tiles in my front yard :)

I like this one. How you can see the wax in the bottom of the bowl, how it sort of morphs into the string. That's cool haha

Frozen Jacket

This was taken up at 12,000 feet; I went outside (it was about 6:00 in the morning, and damn cold) and there was this jacket and a pair of jeans hanging over this pole. I guess somebody had forgotten it outside, a mistake one would not want to make at this altitude, because they were literally covered with frost.

A Short Rest

There's Bippin (the porter), laying down on the grass. He was a pretty funky guy; every time we would stop to rest, he would set down his bags, and immedietly go off and sit down at least five meters away from his bag. One time he went off and started climbing a tree. He was really cool though. In this particular one, he just laid down. Its not much, but I like it.

This was taken at one of the villages we stopped at for lunch (I think this particular one was caled Thatepati). I saw this kid leaning over the table, and funnily enough he's actually playing a game, not sleeping. In the picture it looks more like he's sleeping, with his back arched like that, and that huge jacket makes his head look big lol.
Lighted Leaf

I chose to take a picture of this particular leaf because at the time there was an excellent light shining through the leaf. It wa about 10:30 in the morning I think, and the lighting was just excellent.

Here are some more of those blue mountain flowers. I like this one better than the previous one I posted with theses flowers in it, because of the yellow in the background; I think it goes well with blue in the flowers.

I like this one; it's a picture of a local at a town at about 14,000 ft. Before I left for the trek, I had seen this photo magazine that had a theme of bums. There were close-ups of the faces of bums in California, and I really liked the detail in their faces, so much so that I tried to duplicate the photos myself. Mine aren't nearly as good, but I think this one's not so bad.

This is the same tiny waterfall that I have in the previous picture. I really like both of these ones; I was experimenting with the shutter speed, and I see now that I proably should have made it even slower, to make it look really like the water were moving. Maybe next time it'll wokrk out better

This is, quite simply, snow. I knew when I left for this trek that I would see snow, and I also knew that I wanted to take a picture of it somewhere along the way. I took quite a few 'snow' pics, and I think this one was the best one.
Bippin In the Mist

Here is our porter, Bippin. I thought it looked really cool, the lone figure standing in the mist. This place really looked alot like Emin-Muil, that place in Lord Of The Rings. Its in the Two Towers, when Sam and Frodo are walking in that barren, rocky terrain, and they lose their way. I would have done the same thing here if it weren't for the trail
Rock Columns

I liked these little columns of stones. I think people make them along trekking routes for good luck, or something like that. I thought they were nice.
Prayers Flags On The Rocks

This is yet another one from my trek to Langtang. I took this one up at about 15,000 feet, where we were crossing over the Gosainkundh Pass (I think thats the correct name, not sure). I liked the way the prayer flags were sprawled across the rocks.

With this one, I wanted to capture the picture at a slow shutter sped, to make it look as if the water were actually moving. I think it looks somewhat like that...could have been better.
Frost

I took this one to show the texture of the frost on the table. It was taken up at 12,000 ft, so it was pretty damn cold; I liked the way the frost looked, and thought a macro of it would be cool.
Blue Mountain Flowers

This one I took this past week, while I was trekking in the Langtang region. I thought these blue mountainous flowers were pretty; I took tons of photos on this trek (I was gone for six days) so I'll be posting them up in the next few days (or maybe even weeks lol)
Butterfly Wings

Here's an interesting one; those two big orange/yellow "things" are actually two large flower petals that happen to look like butterfly wings. This was another one taken in one of the many vases in my house; I saw the large orange flower (the same one I had used for two other pictures lol) and decided to take yet another picture of it. This one turned out to look more like the wings of a butterfly than a flower. I think the butterfly wings are cooler...

I took this photo in my living room; we had a brass bowl filled with water and there were all these purpleish, pinkish flowers floating around in it. I thought it would make a pretty picture, so I went ahead and took it. It turned out alright I think, a little out of focus with some of the flowers, but not bad in general. I think the best part of this picture is the color; the purple and pink really look nice to my eyes. I notice now the dark blemishes and markings on the flowers; I didn't see those when I took the picture...
Beautiful Macro

This, I think, is one of my best photos to date. I took this last weekend, it was a Saturday afternoon I believe, and I found myself yet again looking for flowers to photograph. I saw a vase in the middle of my dinner table, and in it was this beautiful white, not quite red flower. I turned it so that the light from the open window was shining on it, focused the shot and clicked the shutter button. I am very pleased with the result; it was exactly what I was hoping for, which is a good sign :). I love macro photography; the extreme close-ups, the attention to detail: I love it all. I think this is a good example of (if it's not too bold to say) a beautiful macro. I'm sorry if I seem arrogant or cocky with this (because I most certainly don't mean to), but I REALLY like this picture. The blend of colors, and how the red gets lighter at the ends of each petal. For me, that's what it's all about. Beautiful Macros.
The Leaf On The Ledge

This was another one of the first few pictures taken with my SLR. I went out on the balcony and saw this leaf sitting on the ledge, which seemed odd, as the ledge was curved and there were no other leaves at all at any place on the ledge. Somehow this leaf managed to find that point of balance where it could stay on. I thought this was so strange; if you saw the ledge you'd know what I mean. This was something I had never stopped to think about before, the fact that leaves can fall and manage to fall in strange positions and places like this one. I think it's a good representation of the little, overlooked, and yet amazing things in life. I had to take a picture of it. I particularly like the focus on the end of the leaf, the part closer to where I took the picture from, and how it seems to blur the more you go back in the photo.

This is the first photo I took with my Canon SLR! I had just got the Canon Digital Rebel XT, with the 18mm-55mm lens, the night before I took this, at about midnight, so I didn't have time to try it out. The next morning I woke up to find my cat Georgia sleeping on my bed; she must have come in the night, and settled down somewhere by my feet. I was reading the manuel for the camera, trying to figure out how to use it, when I noticed the expression on Georgia's small face. She was not yet asleep, but she was well on her way to being so. She looked so peaceful and carefree, that I had to take a picture. The above is the picture I took, of my cat Georgia, sleeping on my bed (and yes, those are rocket ships on my sheets, because I'm cool like that)
White Flowers

This one is yet another one of the flowers in my garden, one that I never really like so much until recently. I was looking through my pictures the other night, and I came across this one, and started wondering why fully appreciated this one. It's probably not one of my favorites, but I think it's good nonetheless.
Yellow Flowers

This picture I took at school. I realized that I had used all the flowers in my backyard, and I needed some new material. I brought my dad's Cybershot to school (this is still before my SLR unortunately, because I think I could have take a better photo with the SLR) with the intention to get some macros of the flowers at school. I didn't find many new flowers, but this was one of the few that I did find. I simply set the camera to macro mode, and got about three inches away from the flower, and shot. The final picture is a bit blurry, and I thought about re-taking it, but I thought it might look good a little bit blurry. I think the main reason for hte blur is my camera-shake; photography has made me realize that I have very shaky hands.
Closed Orange Flower

This is the same "Orange Flower" that I took a photograph of previously. However this time, the flower is closed up; I took this photo in the evening, and the other one I took during the day, when the flowers open up. I thought it would be interesting to see the difference between a flower in the middle of the day, and the same flower in the evening. One thing I like particularly about this photo is the shallow DOF (depth-of-field) of the image; how the background is blured and the complete focus of the picture is the flower, which is what I intended. Not a mistake this time :)
Crunchy Leaf

I was out on my balcony, taking pictures of my cat, and i saw this leaf on the ground when it struck me what an interesting photo it might make. I positioned the leaf so that it was in a good light, and set the camera on macro mode. The original image was really good (if I may say so myself) but when I was fixing up my photos, I thougt it might look good with some blur; I tried it out and I think it made the photo better. I like that there is a little bit in the center of the "blur tunnel" (the top of the leaf) that is still in focus. I decided to call this one "Crunchy Leaf" because it was one of those leaves that you just want to step on, just to hear that crunch when your foot crushes the leaf. I actually did this after I took the photo
